Getting Promoted: Find Problems You Can Solve for Others Who Are Willing to Pay You – Episode 2 – How to Get Promoted – Part 1
So, then this episode is for you. Caleb Taylor and business coach Clay Clark (former US Small Business Administration Entrepreneur of the Year) sit down to discuss what impresses them the most when looking to promote somebody within a position. If you have positions available, then it is important that you must look for candidates that would fit well into that position. How do you know who to promote though? The best person to promote is the person that is always overdelivering and creating more value than what they are being paid for. When you do this, it makes sense to pay them more if you can’t expect to get more value out of them than what you pay. So as an employee, this is the specific characteristic that you must target. Learn to solve problems that your managers and business owners currently have, and solve them prior to them asking you to solve them. When you do this, you will build a reputation of excellence that transcends a one time experience of completing a project early, or bringing your manager a red bull. Once you have identified the problems that you consult for others, make sure that you myopically focus on creating that value for them. Put blinders on and do not let others distract you away from the goal that you’re trying to achieve. As an employee and a business owner, there will always be distractions and things I can pull you away from where you are headed. You must keep your goals out in front of you to lead you in creative direction for what you’re working towards, otherwise you will drift towards certain failure. Put up your goals on your mirror so that you reminded of them daily.
